ON THE 11TH OF NOVEMBER AT 11 O'CLOCK THE COUNTRY STOPS SILENT...
The National commemoration was held at Whitehall in 2010 in Central London where the Queen, among other members of the royal family attended to partake in the two minutes silence and the last post.
Price Harry took part in opening a Field of Remembrance within the grounds of Lydiard Park near Wootton Bassett in Wiltshire. Up to 35, 000 crosses will be planted there, each with a message to commemorate the 342 lives lost since 2001 in Afghanistan.
The poppy remains a poignant symbol of World War I due to John Mcrae's poem 'In Flanders Field'.
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
