SPECIAL PASSCHENDAELE ANNIVERSARY TOURS

'Tommy'The third major battle of Ypres, also known as the Battle of Passchendaele, took place between July and November, 1917.

Of all the many slaughters of the Great War, this has come to typify the senseless and horrific nature of the conflict. After a 10-day preliminary bombardment, with 3,000 guns firing 4.25 million shells, the British offensive started at Ypres a 3.50 am on 31st July. On 6th November, after some of the bitterest fighting in what was virtually a mud swamp, the village of Passchendaele was finally taken by British and Canadian infantry. The offensive cost the British Expeditionary Force about 310,000 casualties.

Throughout the months from July to November, there will be a number of commemorative events taking place in and around Ypres. Our SUNDAY tours will include the Memorial Museum at Passchendaele, the Passchendaele Church and The Old Cheese Dairy, where various exhibitions relating to the British, ANZAC and Canadian divisions are being shown. The Tyne Cot cemetery is naturally included.
