This is a short transfer of 90 minutes (from Heathrow) and it means that you'll have time to rest and enjoy this charming, traditional English village this morning.

This afternoon, after lunch, we'll take a short ride to the Gaydon Heritage Motor Centre. Not as well-known as the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu, but this museum houses the largest collection of historic British cars in the world. Land Rover shuttle rides, off-road 4-wheel drive circuit, and a recreation of a 1930's garage. It's a great place to begin you're tour. We may also find the time to visit the nearby Silverstone Grand Prix circuit.

Shepperton on the Thames

DAY FOUR

What a day we have in store! The legendary Brooklands!

Brooklands Museum opened in 1991 on 30 acres of the original 1907 motor-racing circuit. The Museum features the most historic and steepest section of the old Banked Track and the 1-in-4 Test Hill. Many of the original buildings have been restored including the Edwardian Clubhouse, where period room settings recall the atmosphere of those heady days. The Billiard Room, Clerk of the Course's Office, Ladies' Reading Room and the 'Weighing Court' were all provided for the benefit of the Brooklands Automobile Racing Club members whose slogan was 'The Right Crowd and No Crowding'.

The original Motoring Village with its 1920s Shell and BP Pagodas also includes Malcolm Cambell's workshop, now displaying historic Brooklands racing cars and motorcycles. The recently restored ERA Shed houses the speed record exhibition 'Fastest on Earth' which tells the story of the men and machines that established world records at Brooklands and elsewhere in vehicles developed and tested on the circuit.

The first ever British Grand Prix was held at the track in 1926 and there is an exhibition on the Grand Prix story with cars of the 1920s through to a 1996 McLaren MP4-11 show car. All the historic cars and motorcycles on display in the original motoring buildings have some direct connection with the Brooklands track or are of the type that raced there. The 23,970cc Napier Railton, which held the outright track record at 143.44 mph, is probably the most famous.

The Museum also has a collection of over 30 aircraft representing 80 years of aviation industry at Brooklands from A.V. Roe's first flight to the design and production of Concorde. The unique collection of Vickers and Hawker aircraft includes 'R' for 'Robert', the restored Wellington bomber rescued from Loch Ness in 1985 and now displayed in an original Vickers Wellington dispersal hanger, and the Sultan of Oman's luxurious VC10 which is open on major motoring and aviation event days.

Brooklands Museum.

Spouses alternative attractions: Painshill Park and The Royal Horticultural Gardens at Wisley.

Painshill Park is one of the 18th century's great landscape parks. Here history, art, and landscape design come together spectacularly to offer visitors of all ages an enlightening, breathtaking and tranquil day out. The Royal Horticultural Society Garden Wisley is acclaimed by gardeners throughout the world, but you do not have to be a keen gardener to appreciate the beauty of Wisley.

DAY FIVE

Our final set piece museum is fittingly the British National Motor Museum.

Few car museums in the world can match the unique collection of the world renowned National Motor Museum at Beaulieu. When it comes to cars, motorbikes, commercial vehicles, motoring eccentricities and memorabilia, the National Motor Museum is firmly in the driving seat. With the collection now comprising some 250 vehicles - from some of the earliest examples of motoring to legendary World Record Breakers like Bluebird and Golden Arrow - you are sure to find something to fascinate you.

Beaulieu Museum.

Spouses alternative attractions: Beaulieu House itself (it's a Stately Home) with its beautiful gardens, and later a tour through the New Forest.

DAY SIX

Goodwood Festival Day

. MOT 01 - The 2005 Goodwood Festival of Speed (June)

The Festival of Speed is far more than just a hillclimb; it can justifiably claim to be the world's biggest and most diverse celebration of the history of motor sport. It is the only occasion when you will see in action the greatest competition cars and star drivers from all era - everything from 19th century steam carriages to current Formula One; fabulous racing motorcycles; 2500bhp Land Speed Record cars alongside engineless soapbox racers; plus motor sport legends like Moss, Surtees, Brabham and Andretti rubbing shoulders with today's hottest properties such as Jenson Button and Colin McRae.

The Festival is motor racing's equivalent of Ascot or Wimbledon - an extravaganza of sound and colour that has been described as 'the garden party of the Gods'.

. MOT 02 - The Goodwood Revival Meeting (September)

The Goodwood Revival relives the glory days of Goodwood Motor Circuit which, along with Silverstone, was Britain's leading racing venue during its active years between 1948 and 1966. During this time it hosted contemporary racing of all kinds, including Formula One, the famous Goodwood Nine Hours race and the celebrated Tourist Trophy sports car race.

Now, for three days each September, the circuit stages a historic race meeting for the kind of cars and motorcycles that would have competed at Goodwood during 1948-1966. The circuit echoes to the spine-tingling bark of golden-age Grand Prix cars from the Fifties and Sixties, thundering sports and GT cars, as well as historic saloon cars and little-seen Formula Juniors. Many of these important historic racing cars are driven by famous faces from motor sport past and present. Sir Stirling Moss, John Surtees, Sir Jack Brabham, Phil Hill, Derek Bell, David Coulthard, Damon Hill, Johnny Herbert, Wayne Gardner, Giacomo Agostini and the late, great Barry Sheene have all taken part at the Revival.

But the Goodwood Revival is far more than a series of races for historic cars - it is a magical step back in time and a chance for visitors to revel in the romance of motor racing as it used to be. The lovingly restored circuit is unchanged from its heyday, and great lengths are taken to ensure that everything on the site is exactly as it was. This means that no modern vehicles are allowed within the circuit perimeter throughout the weekend. Period vehicles provide all essential services and competitor support.

Spouse or partner alternative visit: we don't think anyone will actually want to miss this great day as it's simply magical for all. But if we're wrong then the historic city of Chichester and Arundel Castle will be offered as the day's attractions.
